Rug Bakery, the Popular Bakery of Villa Copenhagen, Is Going Full-Scale Restaurant

Copenhagen’s favorite bakery is expanding. A success since day one, Rug Bakery at the heart of Villa Copenhagen is now growing into a full-scale restaurant concept. With a menu of colorful evening dishes, and a curated selection of natural wines and crafted cocktails, the new Rug is an experience that stretches well beyond the daylight hours.

Rug, meaning “rye” in Danish, is the bakery at the heart of Villa Copenhagen. In just a few years, Rug Bakery has become a favorite among locals, with the queues stretching outside the building all days of the week. Now, while the dedication to craftsmanship and quality bread lives on, Rug is expanding to become Villa Copenhagen’s main restaurant. Going forward, what has been a daytime experience continues into the night, as Rug transforms into a full-scale restaurant concept.

Bread and Wine, the Copenhagen Way

At Rug, the day always begins with freshly baked sourdough bread and a cup of coffee. This way to ease into the morning’s rituals has been a proven recipe for success. As a new era in Rug’s history takes shape, a devoted team is going back to the classics, with a mission to give new meaning to an old Danish favorite: bread and wine.

The new Rug kitchen has already started serving up dishes that balance tradition with creativity. These range from beloved sourdough pizzas to unexpected delights, crafted with local ingredients and conscious principles. Wine is bread’s natural partner, and at Rug they focus on the world of natural wines. Together with a local and sustainable approach, this is what Rug is all about.

Open For Business

Despite a bigger suit, Rug will continue being a bakery at heart. What is new is that it’s also a restaurant in mood, and a bar in style. Their laid-back approach stays the same all hours of the day, with a mix of pizzas, wines, cocktails, and music taking over in the evening hours. Whether guests come for the first bite of the morning, or the final toast of the night, Rug continues on being where food and people come together in the heart of the Danish capital.

The daytime bakery continues operating as normal, only now also continuing into the night. Nighttime Rug is open for both visits and bookings as of Friday, February 7, 2025.
