Jørgensens Hotel, a Baroque Palace in Denmark, Joins Nordic Hotels & Resorts

Jørgensens Hotel in Denmark joins the Nordic Hotels & Resorts collection. In the center of the city of Horsens, this baroque palace built in 1744 boasts 59 opulent rooms, a seasonally led restaurant, and grand spaces for both business and celebration.

In the heart of Horsens, Denmark's sixth-largest city, Jørgensens Hotel is among the most recognizable buildings. Today, it joins the Nordic Hotels & Resorts portfolio of lifestyle hotels, bringing the nearly three-century-old baroque building into the Nordic region's largest collection of independent hotels.

Rooms With a Past

Jørgensens Hotel occupies the grand building known as "Det Lichtenbergske Palæ," the Lichtenberg Palace. Dating to 1744, it was built for merchant Gehrdt de Lichtenberg. Today, its 59 rooms run through six categories, with the two most noted ones being the Historical Rooms, with high ceilings and beautifully restored stucco, and the single Royal Suite, at roughly 82 square meters the building's grandest room, featuring a heritage weapons collection. About half the rooms look onto Søndergade, the pedestrian street outside, while the rest face the hotel's courtyard.

For local tastes, guests can dine in Restaurant Eydes in the hotel's vaulted cellar. Here, the kitchen commits to no single national cuisine; instead it cooks to the season, letting the best ingredients available lead the menu.

For events, conferences and meetings, Jørgensens Hotel has space for up to 500 guests across the hotel. When the day's agenda ends, guests can retreat to the elegant wine bar (with its own wine shop), dine at Restaurant Eydes, or settle into one of the private salons. Taken together, it adds a note of 18th-century grandeur to the Nordic Hotels & Resorts collection.

The Merchant’s Palace

At the time of the construction in 1744, Gehrdt de Lichtenberg was one of Horsens' wealthiest merchants. He exhibited his success and wealth in the palace and decorated it with a splendour that was rarely seen in a Danish market town: painted ceilings, fine cabinetry, a private art chamber, hundreds of silver and gold objects, a rich library, and a collection of rare magnificent weapons.

In 1749, King Frederik V stayed at the palace, and de Lichtenberg was appointed “Etatsråd" (Counselor). After de Lichtenberg died in 1764, the Lichtenberg family sold the mansion in 1813, and it was transformed into an inn. In 1849, Anders Jørgensen bought the mansion, giving it the name Jørgensens Hotel. For generations, this iconic building has been one of the city's principal gathering places. 

More recently, Jørgensens Hotel reopened in 2020 after a major renovation, complete with new rooms, dining facilities, and meeting spaces. When de Lichtenberg built the palace, it included a ballroom finished in decorative stucco and ornamented in gold leaf and Prussian blue. That room has since been divided into three guest rooms, its stucco and ceiling paintings intact and restored. 

The modern renovation of Jørgensens hotel went to extraordinary lengths to keep the building's original details intact. In fact, the restoration sought the help of master decorators from Italy—specialists who had previously performed restoration work for the Vatican Museum—who helped restore the lavish, historical ceilings.
