A Timeless Icon, Reborn: Hotel Kämp in Helsinki Undergoes Major Expansion

Since opening in 1887, Hotel Kämp in Helsinki has been a symbol of luxury. Now, the first grand hôtel of Finland undergoes a major expansion, adding 3,100 new square meters to its premises, as well as introducing a new wellness oasis. The historically ambitious refurbishment will be carried out in phases, with the fully renovated hotel due to be completed in early 2026.

An opulent landmark in every sense of the word. Opening in 1887, Hotel Kämp has been an integral part of Finnish cultural history. This was long the favored meeting-place for the most prominent young artists, intellectuals, and journalists of the Finnish 20th century. Having reopened in 1999 after a major refurbishment, Hotel Kämp is now once again looking to the future, revitalising the heart of the city center.

Throughout this transformation, the entire hotel's ambiance and interior will be renewed, technology will be modernized, and the overall guest experience will be elevated. The refurbishment will be conducted with utmost respect for the hotel's history and character, ensuring that it evolves to both meet the expectations of a classic luxury hotel, and the demands of tomorrow’s travelers.

From Spa Favorite to Spa Trailblazer

One major part of the new expansion includes the historic Helander House on North Esplanade. The building is currently being turned into an extension of Hotel Kämp. The transformation of Helander House includes both the facade, as well as improved and more energy-efficient heating and ventilation systems. Additionally, the property's current office spaces will be converted into hotel rooms.

Hotel Kämp has previously had its own spa facilities, the serene Kämp Spa. This has long been a favorite among local spa enthusiasts. Now, the hotel will be taking its wellness offering to new heights by introducing a full-scale spa experience, including water elements.

– Hotel Kämp’s new 1,200 square meter spa offers a unique wellness experience for both hotel guests and members. It boasts a state-of-the-art gym, yoga studio, relaxation area, saunas, experience showers, three pools, seven treatment rooms, a wellness bar, and lounge. I promise an exclusive haven for those passionate about fitness and wellbeing, says hotel owner Petter Stordalen.

In May 2025, the Helander’s expansion project will be completed, allowing guests access to 22 brand new rooms and suites, located within the newly integrated section of Hotel Kämp.

– We simply couldn't resist when the opportunity arose to integrate parts of Helander House with Hotel Kämp. This expansion along with the refurbishment of Hotel Kämp will create entirely new opportunities to attract premium events and meetings to Helsinki, says Strawberry Hotel’s COO Finland, Erika Ehrnrooth.

A New Destination, Step by Step

The investment in Hotel Kämp is being made together with the property owner Ilmarinen.

– We and Strawberry share a mutual vision and ambition to take the next important step in the development of Hotel Kämp. Integrating these two properties is not only a logical solution to expand the hotel's capacity but also an opportunity to find synergies between the properties and operations in the block, says Ville Laurila, Leasing Manager at property owner Ilmarinen.

Hotel Kämp's refurbishment will be carried out in phases. It is expected to be fully completed in the spring of 2026. The extensive project entails refurbishment of all 179 rooms and suites, adding 31 extra rooms and suites, relocating the main entrance back to its original spot facing the Esplanade, elevating the lobby to new standards, and giving the bar and restaurant area a complete makeover. The hotel will be open throughout the refurbishment.

For Tuomas Liewendahl, General Manager at Hotel Kämp, reinventing itself is part of the Kämp DNA.

– Hotel Kämp is one of Finland's most historic buildings, filled with stories and memories. But it is also a building in continuous renewal and development. The work now being done at the hotel means that the story of Kämp continues to be written. We cherish and celebrate the hotel's soul while continuing to create a place that will be of great significance to many people in the future, says Tuomas Liewendahl.
